Welcome to ESITO XI–2009 in Sardinia, Italy!
The eleventh ESITO will be held from 19-24 September 2009 at the Hotel Cormoran, Villasimius, Sardinia, Italy. Participants will arrive on Saturday 19th, and the scientific program will start that evening. The meeting will continue until the afternoon of the 24th with a break on Tuesday 22nd for social activities. Up-to-date information will be posted at this website.
Accommodation will be in the same hotel as our last meeting in Sardinia. For those of you who will be participating in a meeting of ESITO for the first time, the hotel is a comfortable but unpretentious beach resort which, in the opinion of most, is sufficiently suited to our needs. The address is:

As in the past, we will try to avoid charging a registration fee. However, this depends on the level of financial support, and attendants may be asked to make a contribution. Please print out and fill in the pre-registration form (linked below) and send it to the Chair's e-mail address ("Anna Maria Angioy" amheart@unica.it). Considering the limited capacity of the conference room, the number of participants must, unfortunately, be limited. So please, keep in mind that your name will remain on the list of participants and that you will receive further information if you send your pre-registration form within the DEADLINE: January 31, 2009.
The following topics for the meeting have been suggested by general consensus. These are:
- Molecular biology and physiology of chemosensory reception and transduction processes
- Coding and central processing of chemical signals
- Development of chemosensory systems
- Plasticity of chemosensory systems
- Evolution of chemosensory systems
- Chemical ecology
- Applied aspects and robotics
Soon we shall outline the preliminary program, which will be designed according to previous successful formats. Sessions with oral presentations will be held in the morning and late afternoon, leaving time for discussions and other activities. Poster sessions will be arranged around topics, and poster presenters will have the opportunity of giving a 5-minute data-blitz PowerPoint-assisted talk summarizing their poster, with 3-5 minutes for a brief question-and-answers session.
As in past meetings, presenters of talks and posters will be asked to provide an abstract. These will be published on-line and a printed version of the proceeding abstracts will be prepared for the meeting.

Student fellowships
APPLICATION DEADLINE: March 31, 2009
The European Chemoreception Research Organization (ECRO) is offering four fellowships, 500 euros each, to students attending the 11th ESITO. Application guidelines are available in the ECRO web site, http://www.ecro-online.info, at the page Grants of the Main Menu.
